Bentonite is commonly used as soil substitue and filler material for electrical grounding applications in trouble environments. Bentonite is used to reduce the electrical resistance between the soil and earth-electrode rod. The clay is a premium Sodium based bentonite contains rich montomorillonite which has high tendency to absorb, retain water and swells. This property makes it desirable for application in grounding system improvement as they could result in lowering as well as minimizing the fluctuation of ground resistance over a long period of time. Water within the pores acts as particle briding for electrical currents to pass through the bentonite.

Bentonite can be supplied in granular or powder form. Granular is the preferred option for filling trenches as the substance can be mixed in the trench. Powder is the preferred option for pouring into bore holes to ensure the mixture is a thin enough consistency to reach the bottom of the hole.
